The Buddha Solution is a start-up social enterprise that has been set up to tackle the leading societal problems through innovative technological solutions. Our main focus is poverty reduction among the most marginalized sections of the society.
With this aim, we have identified persons with disabilities as our first target group. Our goal is to create self-sustainable livelihood solutions for the differently abled, rather than being a charitable organization that tends to create dependency. Hence, we treat the sellers on our website as partners and not beneficiaries. The idea is to bolster the respect and dignity for the differently abled within the society, and break the myths and misconceptions regarding the abilities of differently abled.
We are not an NGO: The Buddha Solution is not an NGO. This means we do NOT believe in charity and donations for our existence. This organization has been set up as a social enterprise, that will generate profits and plough them back for sustainable livelihood generation of marginalized sections in the society. Since we are adopting an atypical approach to solving problems, we have derived inspiration for our name from the Buddha, who represents one of the first radical thinkers in the history.
We have adopted this alternate approach as charity driven organizations are difficult to scale up and they tend to make their beneficiaries dependant rather than independent. In contrast, our approach is to focus on providing employment to our target group so that they could take care of themselves.
We will collaborate with specially abled artisans and NGOs (that work with the differently abled) to help market their products.
This portal will establish a viable connection between responsible employers and differently abled persons. We will work towards increasing private sector participation in hiring persons with disabilities.
Once we generate sufficient profits and funding, we will start our own manufacturing to create best-quality handicrafts in the market.
While there are more than 6 crore persons with disabilities
in India, this group represents one of the most impoverished communities in the
country, due to very few opportunities for employment coupled with higher
expenses. This is because the skills and talent of the differently abled are largely untapped,
under-developed or utilized in the country. Moreover, problems related to myths, prejudice, stereotyping about their
abilities and low self-esteem further curtain their integration into the
Our goal is to break these barriers in the society through technological and other innovations, which could create a large-scale impact in the society.
Persons with disabilities are denied equal opportunity for
employment in India. This is due to the several barriers that surround their
abilities. Constrained access to basic facilities such as education and public services, further curtails their integration into the
society. While the government has reserved a certain percentage of employment
for the differently abled, this legislation is poorly enforced.
"Employment is a key factor in the empowerment and inclusion of people with disabilities. It is an alarming reality that the disabled people are out of job not because their disability comes in the way of their functioning rather it is social and practical barriers that prevent them from joining the workforce. As a result, many disabled people live in poverty and in deplorable conditions..." - Hon'ble Supreme Court of India, Indian Express, October 08, 2013
"The picture is not very encouraging in the non-government arena as very few NGOs are working in the field of livelihood for PwDs. Further, whatever little is happening in the area of livelihood options for PwDs is hardly being shared; thus minimizing the chances of replication of good practices from the field." - Livelihood opportunities for persons with disabilities, United Nations Development Programme, December 2011
The Buddha Solution has NOT been started by a group of IIT/IIM professionals. We are an ordinary group of energetic and motivated young individuals, who want to make a positive change in the society. At the same time, we want to break the status-quo, with respect to the current model of development adopted by NGO's. Rather than making anyone dependent, we want to make our beneficiaries self-sufficient and independent.
We do not believe in the age-old concept of charity and donations. In contrast, we are looking at long-term livelihood generation for our target group. Hence, we have set-up this organization as an enterprise and not as an NGO. Most of the profits from this enterprise will again be ploughed back for societal benefit. Our full-time employees will be paid a salary, which will be similar to their market-based salary.
